We finished our learning about the Great Fire of London this week by retelling the story in written form and completing our end of unit quiz.

We had lots of celebration winners again this week.  Well done to all of these children who have received Star Badges, handwriting awards and Ninja Reading belts this week!

Week ending 8th October

This week we have been working very hard in Year 2.

We have been working hard on our Harvest Service this week and you can now watch the final performance under the 'KS1 Harvest' tab of the website.

In maths we have continued our topic on addition and subtraction by learning our number bonds to 100 (multiples of 10) and thinking about how we can use our number bonds to 10 to help us.  We have also looked at adding and subtracting ones, and finding ten more and ten less than a number.

In RE this week we learned the story of Mary Jones, who saved up for 6 years and then walked to a village 25 miles away to buy a Bible.  We discussed why the Bible is such a special book for Christians and thought about what possessions are very special to us and why.

In art this week the children have used a different kind of loom and learned about the warp and weft.

On Friday we enjoyed our "Thrive and Flourish" day.  The children enjoyed planted daffodil bulbs and we look forward to seeing them flourish during the Spring!

Finally, congratulations to our celebration winners this week.  As well as Star Badges and Handwriting Awards, we also had our first Ninja Reading Belt winners this week.  These children have already read 25 times since September!  Wow!

In English we have been working hard on our information texts all about Florence Nightingale.

We enjoyed our computing lesson this week, where we learned about different ways to protect our identity online.  One of the ways we discussed was using an avatar instead of a real photograph.  The children then enjoyed creating their own avatars.

We have also been working hard on our Harvest Service this week and can't wait to share it with you all next week!

Finally, congratulations to our Star Badge and Handwriting Award winners this week!

Week ending 24th September

We have had another great week in Year 2.

In English we have started writing our own information texts all about Florence Nightingale.  Next week we will be editing them and then writing up a best copy to go on display!  I am very excited to see the children's final work.

In science this week we investigated different materials to find out which would be the most suitable to make an umbrella out of!  We put some cotton wool into 4 different jars and covered each jar with a different material.  We then dropped water onto each material and watched to see what happened.  A while later, we removed the cotton wool from the jars to see whether it had stayed dry or got wet.  Can your child remember which material we decided would be best and why?

One of the highlights of this week was of course our European Day of Languages on Friday!  Year 2 learned all about Germany and even learned to speak a bit of German!  Everyone looked fantastic in the colours of the German flag, German football kits and German traditional outfits!

And finally, a huge congratulations to our Star Badge and Handwriting Award winners this week!

In history we continued learning about the Great Fire of London.  This week we learned about Samuel Pepys and his diary.  We discussed how his diary helps us to understand the events of the fire.  We then had a go at writing our own diary entries, imagining that we were eyewitnesses to the fire.  I was so impressed with the children's work!
