Nursery
w/b 25. 11. 24
This week in Maths, we have explored position and space; responding to simple positional language and arranging blocks. We have sung songs, re-enacted a story with blocks and made buildings with the blocks, by following pictures. We played Incy Wincy Spider and practised our subitising and counting skills.
In Phonics and Literacy, we have been continuing to develop our listening skills through games and activities, we have practised our pencil control and we have started learning our Christmas songs.
We have started to talk about seasonal changes now that Winter is here. We have learned about migrating birds and hibernating animals and talking about day and night. We have finished reading stories from our author, Nick Butterworth and are now moving onto Christmas and Winter stories.
We have put our Christmas tree up in nursery and we all helped Mrs. Wilson to decorate it. We have also been learning to be more independent and put on our own green waterproof suits when we play outside.
w/b 18. 11. 24
This week we have been continuing to look at numbers 1, 2, and 3. We have read stories based on 3 characters and counted how many animals and objects are on each page. We have also been looking at sequences; how to wash your hands, our daily routines and what comes next in the sequence, using pictures.
In Phonics we have been practising our listening skills through games and activities based on the three aspects of environmental sounds, body percussion and instrumental sounds. We have also been practising writing our names. We are still reading stories from our author, Nick Butterworth and the children are really enjoying the adventures of Percy and his friends.
w/b 11. 11. 24
This week we have been looking at subitising. That is knowing just by looking, that there are 1, 2, or 3 objects. We have played verbs lotto; speaking about action words, taking turns and learning that we can’t always win. In phonics we have been practising our listening skills by hearing and identifying different sounds and instruments and copying clapping patterns. We wore odd socks on Tuesday for anti-bullying week and all of our stories this week have been based around the theme of being kind.
w/b 4th November
What a busy week! We learned about how Diwali is celebrated and coloured some lovely rangoli patterns. We learned about Bonfire Night and made amazing firework paintings, using a printing technique with toilet rolls. We are doing lots of counting in maths and listening games in phonics. We have had lots of fun playing and learning together.
w/b 14th October
Another busy week in nursery. Lovely teamwork and imaginative play. Making leaf pictures and drawing self-portraits. Singing nursery rhymes, including number rhymes in maths. Stories and discussions about growing up – what we can do now that we couldn’t do when we were babies.

In Maths Time, we ordered pictures from smallest to largest, by looking for the smallest one each time. We also sorted autumn leaves – looking at sizes and colours
In Phonics, we played sound lotto, listen and name the instrument and had fun with body percussion sequences to repeat.
Our stories were about farms and growing and we continued to have Elmer stories by this term’s author, David McKee.
Painting autumn trees with broccoli, using the balances to weigh our autumn materials, making obstacle courses to practise balancing, and lots more fun.

In maths this week, we learned about measures, using mathematical vocabulary and a harvest theme. We ordered things according to size and height.
In phonics, we focused on listening and attention, environmental sounds and body percussion.
Our stories this week were around the theme of harvest, farms and how fruit and vegetables make us strong and healthy.
We went into the big hall with the other children and celebrated harvest. We sang songs with actions and the children were amazing.
We had a great day learning about Spain and even went to 'flamenco school'. We had lots of fun!

This week in Maths Time, we have been identifying and matching colours. We have also been sorting pictures according to colour and size.
In Phonics Time, we explored the musical instruments. We followed instructions, played loudly and quietly and had lots of fun! We explored the different sounds we can make with our bodies and listened to environmental sounds to find Teddy.
In Story Time, we continued with our Elmer stories, talked about different families and enjoyed Noah’s Ark.

This term we are focusing on colour and pattern in maths. We have had fun making our own colourful patterns on elephants, fish and people cut-outs.
Phase 1 phonics is divided into categories called ‘aspects’. Within each aspect, children will learn a different skill that will help them with learning and understanding sounds. The seven different aspects include: Aspect 1: Environmental Sounds Aspect 2: Instrumental Sounds Aspect 3: Body Percussion Aspect 4: Rhythm and Rhyme Aspect 5: Alliteration Aspect 6: Voice Sounds Aspect 7: Oral Blending and Segmenting
This term we are focusing on aspects 1, 2 and 3.
This term we are learning / singing traditional nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes are extremely valuable to support language and communication skills, build confidence and prepare children for reading and writing as they get older.
This term our author focus is David McKee. We have started reading all about Elmer and his family and friends and their adventures.
