Other colours like green, do not change.
Year 5 (2022)
Today we didn't know what our new topic was. We had to sort some new mystery words into 3 different groups.
We grouped them into masculine, feminine and plural nouns. Lots of the words were cognates so we deduced that we are learning about school subjects.
¿Qué aprendes? (What are you learning?)
This week we practised this question. We looked at how the qu is pronounced in Spanish, and looked back at other words we have met that contain this sound. We added them to our Key Sounds Collection books.

Year 6
This week, we have been looking at some of the special events that take place during the Christmas period in Spain.
Today we have been language detectives. We looked at a new text and had to look for clues. We guessed by the layout that it had to be a list. We also thought that los dientes might be teeth. We recognised the words la ropa (clothes) and la escuela (school) from work we did in Year 5. Then with the help of the bilingual dictionary we deduced that it was a list of daily routines.
Telling the time
Today we have been learning how to tell the time in Spanish, so that we can say when we do each daily routine.
Half past the hour times A quarter to and past the hour
¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?) Son las ocho y media. (It’s half past 8.)
Now we can put the daily routine and the time we do it, together in a sentence.
Year 5 (2021)
School subjects
Today we had to sort some unfamiliar words out into groups. We noticed that some were masculine, some were feminine and some were plurals. A lot of them were almost the same as English words (cognates), so it was easy to guess their meanings.
Today we learnt how to express opinions about school subjects. We found that some opinion phrases need to change slightly depending on whether they refer to a singular or plural school subject.
Other phrases stay the same, whether they are describing a singular or plural school subject.
Today we had to work out which phrases a set of initial letters represented. We used the chart to help us.
Next we learnt some adjectives to describe each subject with. We had to think carefully about which form of the adjective to use as the endings can change depending on whether it is describing a masculine/feminine/singular/plural school subject.
Today we are putting all the bits together and we wrote some sentences giving an opinion about school subjects, including a reason why. We used the chart to help us build each sentence.
