Early Years and Key Stage 1

This half term  José  introduced us to his friend Elena.

We said hello to Elena and Jose as we passed them around, using the special Spanish greetings we have been learning.

Jose taught us the word, Amigos. (friends).  Jose and Elena are amigos!

We told them our names in Spanish and we made them tell us theirs.

Me llamo... (My name is ...)

¿Cómo estás?

How are you?

This week we learnt a new question in Spanish.

We learnt a new song with actions, to help us to say, 'I'm fine, thank you.'  Estoy bien, gracias.

Buenos días, ¿Cómo estás? Good morning, how are you?

Still image for this video

Next, we changed the words slightly by singing, Good evening, how are you? (Buenas noches, ¿Cómo estás?)

Buenas noches, ¿Cómo estás? Good evening how are you?

In Year 1 and 2, we learnt some different answers to the question, How are you?

Estoy bien -               I'm  well

Estoy muy bien -       I'm very well

Estoy fenomenal -     I'm fantastic

Estoy fatal       -         I'm feeling awful

We played Quiz Quiz Trade, to practise asking and answering the question with lots of different people in the class.

Year 3 2022

Colores (colours)

This week we started to learn the names of colours in Spanish.  We noticed that 2 of the colours have the same strange sound in them.

Using a colour fan and the colours we have learned, we practised a simple question and answer.

¿De qué color es? (What colour is it?) Es rosa (It’s pink)

Still image for this video

¿De qué color es? (What colour is it?) Es morado. (It’s purple)

Still image for this video

We tried to remember our colours by solving anagrams.

¿Cuántos años tienes?  How old are you?

Today we learned this new question and answer.  We looked at the word años (years) and practised how to pronounce it.  We noticed it has the same sound as a word we already know, mañana (tomorrow).

¿Cuántos años tienes? How old are you?

Los días de la semana

Year 4 2022

Today we started to learn the names of some classroom objects.  We played a matching game with the first 4 objects.

Then we found some other objects in the bilingual dictionary.  We discovered that you have to be careful about the word type you are looking for, as some nouns and verbs can look the same eg. book.

¿Tienes una …?

Have you got a ...?

This week we have been learning how to ask for classroom equipment in Spanish, and use a positive or negative reply.

¿Tienes una regla? Have you got a ruler?

This week we practised some of the classroom objects in a rap!

Describing classroom objects with a colour

Today we discovered that some colours have endings that change to match the gender of the noun they are describing.  Here are some examples.

Other colours like green, do not change.

Year 5 (2022)

Today we didn't know what our new topic was.  We had to sort some new mystery words into 3 different groups.

We grouped them into masculine, feminine and plural nouns.  Lots of the words were cognates so we deduced that we are learning about school subjects.

¿Qué aprendes?  (What are you learning?)

This week we practised this question.  We looked at how the qu is pronounced in Spanish, and looked back at other words we have met that contain this sound.  We added them to our Key Sounds Collection books.

¿Qué aprendes? (What are you learning?)

Opinions about school subjects

Today we learnt how to express an opinion about different school subjects.  We learnt some actions to help us.

We learnt that some of the phrases have endings that change if they are referring to a plural subject.

No me gusta la geografía. (I don't like geography.)

Still image for this video

No me gustan las matemáticas. (I don't like maths)

A or B Quiz

Initial letter phrases

Joining sentences

We extended our sentences using the words (and) and pero (but).

Describing subjects with adjectives

This week we looked at some adjectives to describe the school subjects, and how some of them have endings that agree with the subjects depending on whether they are masculine, feminine, singular or plural.

Giving reasons for our opinions

Finally, this week we put everything together and created sentences which gave a reason for our opinions about school subjects.  We used the sentence building sheet to help us.

Who wants to be a millionaire?

Today we played this multiple choice game to practise our grammar.  We had to pick the adjective with the correct ending to match each sentence.

Year 6

This week, we have been looking at some of the special events that take place during the Christmas period in Spain.

Today we have been language detectives.  We looked at a new text and had to look for clues.  We guessed by the layout that it had to be a list.  We also thought that los dientes might be teeth.  We recognised the words la ropa (clothes) and la escuela (school) from work we did in Year 5.  Then with the help of the bilingual dictionary we deduced that it was a list of daily routines.

Telling the time

Today we have been learning how to tell the time in Spanish, so that we can say when we do each daily routine.

Half past the hour times                                                                    A quarter to and past the hour

¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?) Son las ocho y media. (It’s half past 8.)

Still image for this video

Now we can put the daily routine and the time we do it, together in a sentence.

Year 5 (2021)

School subjects

Today we had to sort some unfamiliar words out into groups.  We noticed that some were masculine, some were feminine and some were plurals.  A lot of them were almost the same as English words (cognates), so it was easy to guess their meanings.

Today we learnt how to express opinions about school subjects.  We found that some opinion phrases need to change slightly depending on whether they refer to a singular or plural school subject.

Other phrases stay the same, whether they are describing a singular or plural school subject.

Today we had to work out which phrases a set of initial letters represented.  We used the chart to help us.

Next we learnt some adjectives to describe each subject with.  We had to think carefully about which form of the adjective to use as the endings can change depending on whether it is describing a masculine/feminine/singular/plural school subject.

Today we are putting all the bits together and we wrote some sentences giving an opinion about school subjects, including a reason why.  We used the chart to help us build each sentence.

Year 4 (2021)

Today we learnt some new commands and adverbs to tell us how to do the actions.

Lentamente (slowly)

Rapidamente (quickly).

Classroom objects

Today we learnt the names of some classroom objects.  We used the Spanish bi-lingual dictionaries to help us find more.

Have you got a...?

We used the classroom objects we have learned  in a simple question.

¿Tienes un boli? (Have you got a pen?) Sí tengo, toma. (Yes I have, there you go.)

Still image for this video

¿Tienes un boli? (Have you got a pen?) No, no tengo. (No, I haven't got one.)

The and A in Spanish

Today we learnt that there are 2 different words in Spanish for 'a' and 'the' and that they are different for masculine and feminine nouns.  We explored this through the classroom item nouns that we have been learning about.

Describing with a colour

Finally, we learnt how to describe classroom objects with a colour.  We already know that the adjective comes after the noun in Spanish, but today we found out that some colours have endings that change to match (agree with) the gender of the nouns they describe.

Year 3 (2021)

Los colores (Colours)

Today we learnt how to say the colours in Spanish.  We practised asking and answering the question, with a partner.

Feliz Navidad (Happy Christmas)

Today we learnt how to sing a simple Christmas song, to the tune of Jingle Bells.
