Welcome to Year Two Information Booklet
Week Ending Friday 25th April 2025
This week in our maths we have continued our work on fractions by identifying and finding thirds of shapes and amounts. We revised our numerator and denominator terms and talked about how fractions always need to be EQUAL parts. This can be tricky when we are sharing amounts out to find a fraction of a number so any practise at home would be great!

This week in our English we have been busy making predictions about our new text for the half term.
What could be going on in the story? We have looked at the front cover and the blurb on the back.

In our science this week we carried on our unit on Living Things and Habitats by investigating carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We used a venn diagram to sort out the animals we found out about.

In RE we started our new unit on Special Places by investigating all the different types of special places people have: churches, temples, beaches, woods, our homes there were lots and lots of them!

In DT we finished our unit on Roly Polys by testing out and evaluating the ones we had made/ They went really well - as you can see! A great first week back! Well done everyone!
Roly Polys

Week Ending Friday 4th April 2025
Happy Easter everyone. Well done on all the Easter Bonnets children! You all looked amazing and congratulations to our Year Two winner! We were lucky enough to have a visit from the Easter Bunny! He left us lots of eggs to find! I hope you all have a lovely holiday and have lots of lovely eggs delivered!

We had a lovely lesson learning all about the Easter Story - an interactive time, where we were able to move around the school exploring different scenes from the last days of Jesus. There was plenty of time for reflection as we travelled through the story. Thank you to Claire Liptrott who put so much time and energy into making this possible. We had a really special time.

In our maths this week, we continued our work on fractions by investigating quarters. We learned to identify quarters and find quarters for ourselves. You can do some activities at home to help. Sandwiches, cookies and toast can all be cut into quarters!

In our English we finished off our non-chronological reports on our chosen jungle animals. We had lots of different creatures to choose from!

Week Ending Friday 28th March 2025
Happy Mother's Day to all our fabulous mums, nans and aunties. Thank you for coming to our coffee meetings on Friday and supporting our Fair Trade Market! We hope you had a well deserved relax and treat!

In our maths this week we have started our unit on fractions by identifying half. Remember that a half is one of two equal parts.

In our English we have been researching various animals that might be found on Grandad's Island all ready for writing our own non=chronological report next week. We also wrote a fact file on the story of how our bananas grow and travel to our shops: ready for our banana and choc chip muffins!

In our geography this week we learned about the polar regions of the Earth. Can your child tell you some similarities and differences between the two? Can they remember which animals live in which?

Week Ending Friday 21st March 2025
What a great time we had performing in our Spring Concert! We have worked really hard with Mr Holland from Liverpool Cathedral to learn our songs and as you can see - we did really well!
IMG_9330.mov

This week in our maths we looked at doubling and halving and odd and even numbers. Then we investigated multiplying and dividing by 10. We are getting really good with our ten times tables. We also revised some of our arithmetic strategies for working with two digit numbers.

In our English we have been reading and analysing non-chronological reports on animals that were on Grandad’s island in the story. We are going to write our own next week! Which animals will we choose to report on?

We started our new Science block on Living Things and Habitats by investigating whether things were alive, dead or never been alive. This brought about some interesting discussions: would you say a chocolate cake was dead or never been alive? It was argued that it should be in the dead category because it is made with ingredients such as chocolate and flour that were once alive as plants.

Week Ending Friday 14th March 2025
This week in our maths we have continued working on multiplication and division. We have looked at division through making equal groups and using our multiplication facts to help us solve the division problems. We have also continued to look at the division facts we can work out from arrays. We have been investigating the two times table a little further as well.

In our English we have been busy predicting what we thought our new text would be about. It is Grandad's Island by Benji Davies, but we had to use some clues to make our predictions before we read it! Can you spot all the clues that we did? Look carefully in the tree!

In DT we started our unit on Roly Polys. We looked at how the movement of a roly poly can be directed by where we place the wheels on the end. Can your child tell you the names of the three types of roly poly we learned about?
In PE we looked at transitions in the pace we move at. Is it easier to move from walking to running or from running to walking? When might we need to be able to change our pace when we are playing sports games?

In our science we finished off our unit on forces by investigating the different poles on magnets and how they react to each other. We learned two new terms: repel and attract. What can your child tell you about what we found out?

Week Ending Friday 7th March 2025
We celebrated World Book Day on Thursday by coming in as our favourite characters and reading a traditional Aboriginal tale from the Dreamtime: The Rainbow Bird. We also learned some key facts about Australia and presented them on a fact sheet.

In our maths this week, we continued our learning about multiplication and division. We explored arrays, which are a way of representing multiplication problems and allowing the children to see the commutativity of the numbers. We then looked at sharing numbers of objects out into groups.

In English this week, as part of World Book Day we read and retold the story of The Rainbow Bird and drew our own illustrations to go with it.

In PSHE this week we continued our work on Dreams and Goals by setting ourselves some team challenges! Learning the Macarama, learning some French, learning a poem or a dance! We had lots of fun and were very successful!
Well done Year Two! Lots of fun this week and lots of hard work completed as well!

Week Ending Friday 28th February 2025
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a fabulous half term!
We started our week by continuing our maths unit on multiplication and division. We looked at how multiplication is the same as repeated addition and then began to look at how we can record this in a shorter and easier way by using the X symbol.

In our English this week we have been writing our own finding stories using our very own creature designs.
The children were super imaginative with their creatures and enjoyed writing their stories. We looked at how we could include things such as noun phrases, questions and What exclamation sentences to ensure our stories were super interesting!

In science this week we looked at magnets and investigated different objects to see if they were attracted to the magnets or not and why this might be the case. We made our predictions first and then tested them out. We had some surprising results!

In Art and Design we completed our final pieces of work based on the work of Maeve Wright. We had such a great time using the different media and I'm sure you will agree - they look amazing!

In PE we were trying to improve our reaction times when throwing and catching! We did mange to get slightly faster each time! Another busy, great week! Well done Year Two!

We had a great time doing our sponsored pancake flipping with the Friends of Cronton! There were some very serious flippers in Year Two!

Week Ending Friday 14th February 2025
What a fabulous last week of the half term we had!
We had a fabulous time at The Blue Planet Aquarium where we learned about plastics in the sea and animal habitats. We saw all sorts of aquatic life and loved seeing the divers in with sharks and rays.

We also enjoyed a Valentine’s Day disco after our busy day at the aquarium! Thank you Friends of Cronton!

In our maths work this week, we started our unit on multiplication and division unit by looking at equal and unequal groups. We looked at how groups can be organised and how we can make different equal groups for the same number of objects.

In English we have been busy writing a recount of our trip. A recount has to be chronological, which means that we have to write about the things we did in the right order and use words such as; first, next, after that and later.
We also designed our own creatures, ready to write our own ‘finding story’ based on The Bog Baby.

In science this week we investigated whether forces can change the shape, speed and direction of different objects. We found that it all depends on the object and the force we choose to use.
What a great week we have had!

Week Ending Friday 7th February 2025
This week in our maths we have finished our block on money by solving problems involving giving change and problems that require more than one step to solve.

In our English this week we have been looking at an example of a good finding story (What A Good One Looks Like) in preparation for writing our own. We looked at how the story was organised: Introduction - finding a creature - a problem - the solution. We also revised the different sentence types: statement, question, command, exclamation. Can you find any examples of these in the example text?

In our science this week we investigated forces a little further by experimenting with friction. We needed cars, ramps and different surfaces to do this. We discovered that the more bumpy a surface the shorter the distance the cars travelled because there is more friction.
In PE we finished off our jungle animal dance and in our art we have begun our final town scape pieces.
Another busy week in Year Two!

Week Ending Friday 31st January 2025
Kung Hei Fat Choi!
This week we have celebrated Chinese New Year - the Year of the Snake. we learned some facts about the country of China and then learned about how the new year is celebrated. We made our own fact sheets about the festival and tasted some Chinese food. YUM!

In our maths we have continued investigating money. This week we have looked at making amounts using pounds and pence and finding equivalent amounts. We looked at lots of different possibilities to solve the problems posed.

In our English this week we have been investigating non-fiction writing and how to best present information. We did this by preparing and writing our own fact files on the Bog Baby. We learned how to group information and use subheadings to make it clear for our readers.

In P.E. this week we had another go on the large apparatus and looked at making balances part of our routines. Im sure you will agree we have some very talented gymnasts! Look at Rosie making it to the top of the ropes! Amazing technique Rosie!

Week Ending Friday 24th January 2025
In our maths this week we have been continuing our work on money but this time working with counting up amounts in pounds and then in pounds and pence. This took a little bit of practice - especially remembering to add the pence!

In English we have read our story The Bog Baby and looked at how we can describe him using noun phrases, (at least one adjective and a noun). We also thought about how the Bog baby was feeling at different parts of the story and used conjunctions to write sentences about his emotions. Can your child tell about how the Bog Baby's emotions changed in the story and why?

We finished our geography this week by undertaking some field work. We went out to use the compasses and the one painted on the yard. We drew what we could see in each direction.

In art, we carried on our initial pieces of work based on a piece by the artist Maeve Wright and then went out to do some observational sketches ready for exploring different media next week.

In PE we got out all the big apparatus and explored rolling, jumping and balances on different equipment. We had a great time and used the apparatus in lots of different ways!

In computing we continued our unit on digital photography by investigating whether it is best to use a landscape or portrait style. We are getting good at taking these photos!

Week Ending Friday 17th January 2025
This week we have started our unit on money in maths - we began by counting out amounts of coins and then using them to make different amounts. We investigated different combinations of coins to make a given amount. Money can be a tricky thing for children to work with as you have a single unit e.g. a 10p piece that represents more than one thing. Any practice at home, counting up spending money, going to the shop or just playing at home will all help.

In our English we have started to investigate our new book for the half term which is The Bog baby by Jeanne Willis. We thought about what sort of a creature a bog baby might be and what he might like to do in his bog habitat.

In art we have started our learning about the contemporary artist Maeve Wright. We learned a little bit about her life and looked at some of her work. She enjoys painting and drawing townscapes.
In computing, we have started our unit on digital photography. We started by looking at different items to do with computers and sorting them into two groups: things that take photos and things that don't.

Did you ever wonder what we reused and recycled our polystyrene blocks into? Key rings! Don't they look amazing?
Week Ending Friday 10th January 2025
Happy New year to you all! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
We have had a fantastic first week back with all things Science!
We started with a workshop on carbon monoxide, where Super Seymour helped us learn all about the gas and how to keep safe in our homes. We were given a free carbon monoxide alarm each and have designed posters to help us remember.

We had a great science assembly from Mad Science where we learned about reaction times and different forces.

Cronton College came in to help us explore magnets, electricity and lots of other things. We had a great time! Thanks Mrs Wynne!

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
We finished off our science block on plastics and helping the environment by creating an underwater collage made entirely out of recycled materials!

How can we change polystyrene blocks into something new?
Watch our experiment to find out and see what we made!
We Can Do Science!

We finished off our very snowy week with a pantomime! We had a great time!
week Ending Friday 20th December 2024

Plenty of lovely things this week in school! Cronton’s Got Talent (and this year we CERTAINLY have!), discos and parties! Not to mention Breakfast with Santa, who took time out on this very busy time of year to come and visit us!
We will see you in the new year.

December 2nd 2024 - December 13th 2024
What a busy couple of weeks we have had in Year Two!
First of all was our Christmas Concert led by Mr Holland from Liverpool Cathedral. We have spent a long time learning and practicing the songs and we were amazing! Well done Year Two.

Our next big event was our KS1 Nativity in church on Sunday 8th. Year Two - you were ALL utterly fantastic and I know everyone was super impressed by your singing and acting! Very well done!

We completed our Santa Dash! Lots and lots of great running everyone and then watched a fantastic performance by B Tales. Jonah and the Whale and the real meaning of Christmas. We really enjoyed the afternoon and there was some great audience participation!

We finished our DT block by making (and eating) our sandwiches! Everyone seemed to enjoy every mouthful and there were lots of children using safe methods they had learned very well to slice their ingredients.

In our maths we have started our new block on 2D and 3D shapes. We have named them, looked at edges and sides, faces and vertices. We have also learned that shapes such as pentagons and hexagons are not always regular! Then we learned about symmetry and tired our best to complete shapes so that they were symmetrical.

Week Ending Friday 29th November 2024
This week in our maths we have been looking at adding two 2 digit numbers together across a ten and looking to exchange some ones into tens to help make it easier to add up. We have also been doing lots of learning around our two times tables.

In English this week we have been writing setting descriptions and learning the difference between sentences and noun phrases. We have been analysing a setting description to see how we can write a good one next week.

We have been busy practicing our Nativity play all ready for the 8th December and learning our songs for our concert with Year Five next Friday.
In geography we learned what a continent was and named the seven continents of the world. There is a song on YouTube by Hopscotch all about this. We learned them in order of size from biggest to smallest. The children recognised that we were part of the continent of Europe.
In P.E. we continued with our team games and carried on working towards our sandwich making in DT.
Blue team celebrated St. Andrew's Day on Friday by coming into school in blue clothes.
Another great week in Year Two!

Week Ending Friday 22nd November 2024
This week in our maths we have been looking at what happens to two digit numbers when we add or take away 10. We have been investigating what happens when we add or subtract multiples of ten as well. We spotted something interesting about the tens digit and the ones digit. Can your child tell what happens to a two digit number if we add or take away ten?

In our English we have continued to make predictions about our new text before reading the story. We will be reading and completing work around The Night Gardener by The Fann Brothers. The illustrations in this book are truly beautiful. We have looked at describing a setting from the beginning of the story and considered who we thought the mysterious man might be.

We started our geography unit this week by learning about compasses, what they are used for and the four different points. We then used an atlas to locate our own country and then a country to the North, South, East and West of us.
We continued our environmental science unit by considering the advantages and disadvantages of plastic and what we can do to be responsible with how we use it.
We have also been very busy starting to learn our songs for the Nativity play this year.

Week Ending Friday 15th November 2024
This week has been Anti- Bullying Week. We have thought about how we are all different but all share lots of things in common as well. We have read lots of stories to help us understand what bullying is and how being unique is brilliant. We read Odd Dog Out by Rob Biddulph and did a draw along with the author. We also read Murray the Smallest Owl and wore odd socks for a day.

In our maths this week we have carried on our unit on addition and subtraction with solving calculations involving subtracting across a ten and subtracting back to the nearest 10 to make us more efficient in our working out.

In our English this week we have started to make some predictions about our next vehicle text. I wonder what the story is going to be called? I wonder what might happen in the story? Can you discuss the pictures with your child and see what predictions they might make?
In DT we tasted lots of different breads to see which we would like to use in our sandwiches. In PE we looked at making up our own floor routines by combining rolls, jumps and balances.

In History we finished our unit on Wartime Nursing by comparing the lives and work of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale for similarities and differences.
Week Ending Friday 8th November 2024
Welcome back to the start of another busy half term! I hope you had a good holiday. This week in our maths we have been continuing our block on addition and subtraction. We have been adding and subtracting ones, adding 3 one digit numbers (look for a double or a way of making 10 to make it easier), adding to the next 10 and adding across a ten.

In our English this week we began to write our letters to Tom to warn him of the dangers he might face on his voyage and give him some helpful tips to keep himself safe!

In our science this week we began our Environmental Science unit by learning how plastic is made and finding out just how versatile it is. Look how many things we found in our classroom that were made of plastic!

In our computing we began by looking at what items we use are computers and which are not.
In PE we started our block on gymnastics by investigating and developing our rolling, balancing and jumping and putting routines together.

Week Ending Friday 25th October 2024
What a great week we have had in Year Two! On Wednesday we were lucky enough to work with artist Andrea
in preparation for our Spring art block on Maeve Wright. We explored colour mixing and thickness and thinness of paints and then looked at townscapes and buildings. We drew our own townscapes and thought carefully about different types of lines and how we can position items in our work to create depth and perspective.
It was a fantastic morning!

We held our School Council elections this week. Candidates had to give their speeches to the class at the hustings before we went to the polling station in the hall. Our council candidates will be announced in the newsletter when we return.

In maths this week we have been looking at how knowing our number bonds to 10 can help us work out and learn out number bonds to 100. So for example if we know 2 + 8 = 10, then we also know 20 + 80 = 100 - it is the same but 10 times bigger. We looked at the difference between counting how many 10's there are in a number and how many single units there are in a number. For example 28 has 2 tens and 8 ones and is 20 + 8. We found this a little tricky as sometimes we were recording 20 tens and 8 ones. Practice at home to help with this could be done using 10p and 1p pieces.

In our history this week we have learned about another nurse who also helped the soldiers during the Crimean War. Can your child tell you her name, what the soldiers called her and some facts about the changes she brought in that are still used in hospitals and nursing approaches today?

Week Ending Friday 18th October 2024
This week in our maths we have been starting to explore addition and subtraction and how they are related to one another. We have been exploring fact families. Here is an example of a fact family and a couple for you to have a go at together at home.

In our English lessons this week we have been investigating the illustrations from A River in preparation for our letter to Tom to help him keep safe on his journey. We made super list poems of the things we saw in the illustrations.
In our history this week, we learned about a very special lady who helped the soldiers in the Crimean War. She used all her own money to set up a hospital for the soldiers. Can your child tell you who this lady is and some facts about her life and the work she did?

In PE we worked on team building exercises - including passing a hoop along our teams without using our hands or letting go of our team mates hands!
We finished our science block on materials by investigating which material out of plastic, cardboard, fabric and paper towels would help Teddy stay dry in the rain. We had lots of fun and there wasn't TOO much spillage!
Can your child tell you which material was the best at keeping our toy people dry and why?

Week Ending Friday 11th October 2024
This week in our maths we have been looking at counting in 2's, 5's, 10's and 3's and trying to spot which one a number line is counting in steps of. It is important that we look at all the numbers on the line before we start to we can work out what it is counting in and whether it is ascending or descending. We have also been using our counting stick to learn our two times table by rote. We are getting quite good!

In our English we finished off our circular stories which were filled with lots of lovely description! Mrs Jones also had an unusual discovery while on one of her early morning dog walks! A letter from Tom, the character in our story asking for our help! We are going to think really hard next week and write our replies!
We also learned about different sentence types: statements, commands, questions and exclamations.
Can your child give you an example of each?

In our Art and Design, we completed our final pieces and |I am sure you will agree - they look fantastic! Well done Year Two! It was World Mental health Day on Thursday so we spent time practising mindfulness and learning ways we can help our brain stay healthy. A great week Year Two!

Week Ending Friday 4th October 2024
This week in our maths, we have carried on exploring our understanding of place value by estimating where numbers go on a number line, comparing groups of objects and numbers to decide which are greater and fewer. We have used the symbols for greater than and lesser than in our work.

In English we have planned our own circular stories and started to write them. I can't wait to read the finished pieces if the first paragraphs are anything to go by! They are going to be amazing.
In PE this week we played some games to help us increase our reaction times and practised rolling, under arm and over arm throws to a partner.
We have completed our final pieces for our Art and Design unit this week and all the children worked really hard to produce amazing weavings!

In history this week we learned about a very famous man who helped to rebuild London after the Great Fire. I wonder if the children can remember who he was? Can they name any famous building he designed? can they tell you how the rules for building in London changed after the fire?

Week Ending Friday 27th September 2024
God Dag to you from Sweden! Year Two enjoyed a great European Day of Languages. We learned about the country, its capital city, what it is famous for and the climate; and of course listened and danced to some ABBA! Can your child tell you any of the facts we learned?
We lead the EYFS and KS1 Harvest Festival Service and did an amazing job of learning and delivering our lines! Thank you everyone for your donations for Food Bank - we were overwhelmed with your generosity.
There was some excellent singing about Big Red Combine Harvesters by you all!

In maths this week we have been exploring number lines using tens numbers and tens and ones. We learned that it is really important to look at all the numbers already on the number line before we fill in any missing ones so we know what the numbers are counting in.

In English we have read another circular story based on our story. A circular text is one that starts and ends in the same place. We have started to analyse What a Good One Looks Like (WAGOLL) as we are preparing to write our very own circular stories.

In Art and Design this week we went and collected lots of natural materials and experimented by weaving with them on a different type of loom. We had a lot of fun!
What a great week in Year Two!

Week Ending Friday 20th September 2024
Another busy week in Year Two! In our maths this week , we have been looking at writing numbers up to 100 in word form and flexibly partitioning numbers up to 100. We have also been looking at our 2 times table. We will need to know this off by heart, along with our 5 and 10 times tables by the end of the year. Starting next week we will be having a short little 2 times table quiz to see how we are getting along!

In English we have been re-reading our text A River and learned that if you put adjectives and nouns together you make 'noun phrases'. We read our text to see if we could find any noun phrases to go on our working wall. Then we made our own noun phrases using one of the illustrations.

In art and design this week, we learned a simple weaving technique using paper looms and strips of paper. They made a great pattern!
In our history we learned about the importance of historical documents that tell us about the events of the times they were written. We learned about Samuel Pepys and his diary. It told us all about the Great Fire and what happened.

In science we investigated which materials we could change by squashing, squeezing, stretching and twisting. We investigated blu tack, wood, plastic and paper. After we had made our predictions we got testing!

In PSHE we looked at helpful and unhelpful behaviours and thought about how we can make sure we try to use helpful behaviours as often as we can.
In P.E. we played lots of team games that involved throwing and catching and races.

Week Ending Friday 13th September 2024
It was lovely to meet many of you at our Meet the Teacher on Monday. I hope you found the evening useful.
In maths this week we have continued to look at place value and have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones using dienes equipment to work practically before moving onto pictorial representations. It can be a little bit tricky but we all persevered!

In English we have been reading our story: A River by Marc Martin and learning about nouns and adjectives. We have been using the illustrations to write sentences that use both these types of words. Can your child tell you about nouns and adjectives?

In our history this week we looked at the reasons the Great Fire of London was able to spread so quickly. We learned what the streets and houses were like and what building materials were used. We learned that they had no fire engines and made our own bucket chain from The River Thames to the 'fire' in our classroom. Fire fighting 1666 style!
In PSHE we talked about worries and what do to and who to talk to. We filled in our own worry monsters.
In Art and Design, we looked at different fabrics to see how they have been made.
A great first full week in Year Two!
