A HUGE thank you from both Mrs Gillies and myself for your extreme kindness today. We really appreciate all of the gifts and cards and lovely messages. We hope you a wonderful, restful and magical Christmas. We look forward to seeing you all back again in January!
Year 6 have had a brilliant term and a fantastic last week. It's been full of Christmas festivities and lots of fun. Super proud of all of the children, who ALL performed in the talent show this week too. We enjoyed lots of quizzing and a delicious Christmas dinner, as well as some special celebrations saying goodbye to some very loved members of staff.
Well done on all of your hard week this term Year 6. See you in January!
Week ending: Friday 5th December 2025
Year 6 have been once again brilliant this week. We've had a busy week that started with a Btales show telling us the story of Christmas through a really fun and engaging show - the battle of the kings! On Wednesday, we took part in TriKidz and the children were outstanding. They showed real resillience and determination in what was a really tricky challenge.
In writing, we have written our final pieces for our Darwin narrative and it has been lovely to see children taking pride in their writing and making their best efforts to edit and improve their writing, before writing it up neatly for display.
In maths, we continued our work on fractions. I have been blown away by the children's understanding! They've been amazing with adding and subtracting fractions, as well as multiplying fractions.
Across the wider curriculum, we have continued to learn about advent in RE... focusing on the fourth advent candle this week - People of God. We talked about tricky concepts that were new to the children but the discussions were exceptional. In geography, we continued learning about trade across the globe. In Science, we looked evolution and focused on the evolution of horses and how they have changed over many millions of years.
We were very lucky to watch KS1 in their dress rehearsal ahead of their show on Sunday. The children were brilliant and there were lots of proud faces from children watching their younger siblings perform. Well done KS1!
We finished the week with some PE as well as some practice for our KS2 carol service. We look forward to seeing you there!
Week ending: Friday 14th Novemeber 2025
Year 6 have had a brilliant week! We have learned a lot and the children have worked really hard.
Maths this week was all about finishing our unit on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We did some work on mental calculations and moved onto BIDMAS! The children really enjoyed trying to follow the law of BIDMAS to get the correct answers. We also completed an arithmetic on Friday and the children were brilliant at using all of their arithmetic skills.
In English, we spent a lot of time focusing on grammar and vocabulary as we've explored our new text. We have looked at lots of different types of SPAG and have grown in confidence identifying different types of word classes. We applied our learning by writing a short poem and a short setting description during writing. In Reading, we continued to read Malamander and have confidently answered questions well around the chapters that have read. The children are really beginning to understand the text!
We had a special service for remembrance day - well done to the Y6 children in the Ethos group who helped with this.
We also had lots of strange sock and crazy hair appearing in school this week for Anti-bullying week. We completed some activities around this during PSHE on Wednesday too. Well done everybody for your energy and enthusiasm with this! In RE, we looked at our next lesson on advent and looked at Old Testament passages that talk about Jesus. In Science, we looked at DNA and what this is - ask your child what it stands for! We labelled where DNA is found and looked at cells closely, whilst exploring what exactly DNA is. In Geography, we looked minerals that are found across the planet and which countries have which natural resources readily available to them. This was an interesting lesson and a great opportunitiy for lots of the children to show off their understanding of the map!! There were a few... more rusty map readers too. Why not get a world map out this weekend and take a look at it with your child?
We finished the week with some gymnastics and went over lots of our key basic skills for gymnastics, and built up to a routine.
Well done this week everybody. Remember, if you can be anything, be kind.
Crazy Hair Day!
Wow! The children looked amazing on crazy hair day! The effort you have gone into is exceptional. Well done everybody! A great way to share how we are all different and all unique... and sometimes a little crazy!
Week ending: Friday 7th November 2025
Year 6 have had a brilliant first week back at school. They've worked really hard and showed lots of our learning attitudes consistently. We were blown away by the support of family and friends towards our fun run in aid of Sam's Diamonds Cancer Support Group. With your kindness, we were able to raise a huge £476.66 for the charity. We were privileged to have a visit from Jess, who works for Sam's Diamonds, who came to explain about the charity to the children and give them some certificates for their hard work prior to the run. The children had a lot of fun during the run and showed a lot of perseverance!
In maths, we finished looking at long division and the children really increased in confidence with this. In English, we began our new topic looking at the adventures of Charles Darwin and his discoveries in nature. This links well to our new topic in Science too: evolution. As part of Geography we have been looking at trade links and focuwed on our local area firstly, exploring whether our local area consisted of mostly primary, secondary or tertiary industries, or just a mixture of them all.
We continue to enjoy Malamander and are looking forward to getting into the text even more. Well done to all children this week!
What a fantastic day Y6 had at the Imperial War Museum! A brilliant way to enhance our learning about WWII. Well done to the children for their brilliant behaviour whilst they were out on the trip.
The children have made a brilliant start to the year. They have been busy working hard and stepping up into Year 6.
In maths, we have completed our unit on place value and are currently working through our calculations unit. We have worked hard reading large numbers and continue to work on this, and we have recently been working on multiplication. We have worked hard on long multiplication and have been focusing on setting out the calculations and completing with accuracy. We are looking forwards to learning about division and are working towards becoming fluent with long division, dividing 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.
In Writing, we have looked at the text 'Rose Blanche'. This is a powerful text that follows the story of a little girl in Germany during the war. There is a lot of learning to take from the text! Our first writing unit was a challenging one where the children had to write a diary entry from the perspective of Rose. Our second writing unit, which we are working through, focuses on writing a bravery award speech for Rose.
Similarly, reading has had a focus linked to WWII. We have read the book 'Hana's Suitcase' and this has been a powerful read for both staff and children. The book follows the story of Hana and her brother George, two Jewish children who were impacted by the acts of the Nazis during the war. The story is a sad one and gives children lots of opportunity to reflect on these events. However, the book also follows the story of a modern day person called Fumiko who wants to understand the story of Hana. This element of the story offers a lot of hope as the story of Hana lives on in the lives of the children she works with in the group 'Small Wings'.
We have now moved onto our second text, Malamander, which we are very excited to read.
In History, we have also focused on WWII and have looked at the impact of the war in Britian, including looking at the Blitz, the Battle of Britain and Evacuation. It has been a brilliant topic and it has been fantastic to see the children so engaged in their learning!
In Science, we have been learning about electricity and have looked at atoms and what they are made up of, and have looked at lots of different electrical components and their purposes. In PE, we have spent time doing Rugby and Athletics, as well as a number of games to improve basic sporting skills. The children have enjoyed Art and Spanish this half term too, with our art focus being on LS Lowry. In PSHE, we have thought about our goals and aspirations and out attitudes towards achieving these, and also how to deal with setbacks. We enjoyed thinking about JK Rowling and how she combated disspaointment and setbacks. We have also done computing this haf term and have looked at how each website has a different address, their IP address, and have discussed how computers and networks talk to each other so that people can work together.
Extras
We have enjoyed collecting for the foodbank during Harvest. Thank you to all parents and families for their suppot with this. Rosa and Ava enjoyed a trip to the foodbank to drop off the food items and have a tour.
We had a fantastic morning with Great Athletes, completing our sponsored sports circuit to raise money for our school. It was inspirational to hear from Emily Ford, a team GB rower, about her experience. Thank you to all families and friends who supported with sponsors.
School council were voted for and Rose and Franky were voted in as our school councillors for this year. We are looking forward to seeing the work they do!
Peer mentors were chosen in Year 5 and were given their badges and jackets this year - they've even been given brand new high-vis jackets! They also recieved training from Dave Sweeney about making games on the playground.
Prefects were chosen also this half term and were given their badges. They are doing a great job!
We have a number of exciting things coming up... including Debt Awareness with Mr Soutter, our trip to the Imperial War Museum, a visit from a lady from the Northern Holocaust Education Group, as well as finishing the half term with our charity fun run in support of Sam's Diamonds charity as part of our courageous advocacy week.
What a busy half term! Well done everybody.
Year 6 were brilliant courageous advocates as they helped collect and organise all of the school's donations for the foodbank. Two of our wonderful children took the donations to our local foodbank warehouse and had an informative tour from Vicky. Well done Y6!

We will miss you lots as move on!

Wow! What a week in Year 6. The children have worked so hard since coming back and have really shown great retention of their knowledge after a few weeks off. They’ve all really impressed me!
We have finished our maths curriculum so have been looking back over lots of our learning and it’s been great to see so many children digging deep to apply their learning. We’ve been doing similar in reading and in grammar as we prepare for our KS2 assessments in the next couple of weeks.
In PE, we’ve enjoyed doing tennis and some basketball. The children have shown some great skills in tennis and have been trying to improve their grip and control of the ball, using both backhand and forehand.
In History, we began our local area study of Liverpool and have looked at the impact that the slave trade had on the city. This has led to some deep and important discussions which the children have dealt with very maturely.
In science, we began looking at flowers and their reproduction. The children have also enjoyed some Spanish and PSHE this week… with perhaps a few extra minutes in the sun from time to time!
Well done this week everybody. You have been brilliant. Let’s keep up the good attitude and remember - just do your absolute best every day.

The children have been brilliant this week. Well done Year 6!
Week ending: Friday 7th March
What a joy it was to see all of the children dressed up for World Book Day! There were so many fantastic costumes so thank you all for your effort and support for this. It was a great day and we did lots of activities around reading. We looked at the book The Great Kapok Tree and explored the message of the book, and also who we would recommend the book to.
In maths this week, we have been looking at percentages and finding percentages of amounts. We have really had to show resilience through this but it has been wonderful to see it all clicking in lots of the children's heads as we have grown in confidence doing this. Homework next week will be around this so keep on the look out! It was also wonderful to welcome a number of children to the 40 club this week, with all children doing fantastically well on their arithmetic.

Our book in WCSR, Other words for Home, is a brilliant one and is such an easy one to just keep reading and reading. It's a page turner, but not in the thriller way. What a busy week! It’s been so good to see the children making great progress with their arithmetic skills and scores… a number of new members to the 40 club!

With Wednesday being Chinese New Year, we also spent some time looking at this and had a good chance to investigate which years we were born in, as well as our family members and teachers. The children were overjoyed to be able write “Mr Tunstall is a rat” in their book… they may laugh but we year of the rat folk did win the great race! We also made Chinese paper lanterns for you to put up in your own homes.
Well done this week Y6.

In maths this week, we continued our work on ratio and proportion. We have spent time looking at scale factors, looking at proportion and looking at recipes and how to use ratio to help us scale up or scale down the amount of ingredients we might need. The children really impressed with this!
In English, we have written setting descriptions based on our new text. The children were tasked with creating a really tense and stormy atmosphere, describing the setting of being out at sea during a raging storm. The children were brilliant at choosing words that created a war-like or battle-like atmosphere that really made the boat seemed vulnerable, and the storm seem strong. We can't wait for you to read some on parents' evening!
In reading, we FINALLY finished Malamander. It was a brilliant ending to the book and, in the end, we were sad to see it end. It's been great to see a number of children eager to read the follow up novels too! We began out new text, Other words for Home, which has already captured our attention.

In English, we’ve been reading our vehicle text: Darwin - Origin of Species and writing a discovery narrative based on Darwin’s experiences on his travels. We’ve enjoyed writing a setting description and thinking about how we can convey character in speech. We also put some work into researching our chosen discovery animal and immersed ourselves in jungle life with the help of David Attenborough. This will help our writing to be more real to us!

In maths, the children have shown great enthusiasm and have really shown fantastic retention with their place value learning, retaining lots of information from previous year groups. Keep practising those times tables!
In English, we have all enjoyed our grammar challenges this week! Ask your children what their favourite grammar song is… then ask them to play it… it’ll never leave your head! A complete ear worm.
https://youtu.be/FK2Gyto5gTQ?feature=shared
In Art, we created some visual notes all about Lowry and inspired by his style. The children really enjoyed doing this and their artwork was exceptional!
We enjoyed creating a page all about the Blitz in history. We thought about IP addresses in Computing and in RE we thought about Rites of Passages and those real significant moments in life.
We are looking forward to celebrating harvest next week and have enjoyed practising some lines and songs for our service next Friday. We hope to see you there!
Friday 6th September
Welcome back!
It is has been so lovely to welcome our wonderful Year 6 children back to school this week. Already we have seen them stepping up, taking on leadership roles and showing a great work ethic.
It has been fun to catch up on what their summer holidays brought and talk about the year ahead. We have done a number of tasks to try and settle back into school life and also started our new history topic: Britain at War.
We have enjoyed reading the start of our new text too. Hana’s Suitcase is an emotional read which will really help us with our learning about WW2.
In maths, we have done some recapping of our Year 5 learning and did have a go at some Year 6 arithmetic work today. The children showed lots of great attitudes and it was lovely to see things coming back to children that they had forgotten.
We finished the week with some tag rugby in the sun. Well done everybody!
PE this year will be on Tuesday and Friday.
Homework and spellings will be set on a Monday and will be in for the following week.
Thank you,
Mr Tunstall
