Year 4

Week ending 23.6.23

This week the children have worked so hard on their assessments! I have been so impressed with their resilient attitudes. We have been applying our knowledge of decimals to solve problems with money in Maths. In English, we have been learning how to punctuate direct speech correctly, and exploring how clauses can be moved around within a sentence. We have continued to learn about the History of Widnes, researching about the chemical industries that were built in the town. We have enjoyed practising our control skills in PE, as the children enjoyed learning the rules of hockey. The have been practising for the Summer concert and can't wait to show off their musical talents on Monday!

Week ending 16.6.23

 

We have had a fantastic first week back this week! In English, we have been exploring our new text Manfish, in preparation for writing an invention narrative later in the term. In Maths, we have been looking at money, working on our estimation skills. We are enjoying our new book The Unforgotten Coat in WCSR, which is about two refugee brothers from Mongolia settling in Liverpool. In History we have began delving into the history of Widnes, starting off with analysing the Widnes Coat of Arms and learning about its meaning. We are enjoying environmental science, looking at the Destruction of Habitats and making links to the deforestation art project we completed at the start of the year. 
 

In computing, we have finished off our photo editing topic by taking and editing some photos of our own. Here is a beautiful picture of one of our pupils and edited by Harper, I love the lighting of this photo!

 

Also, a big WELL DONE to all the children in Year 4, who have completed their national times tables check this week. The children have been practising for this test everyday for the past few months and I’m sure their hard work has paid off.

 

It has prepared them for the final assessment week of the year which will begin next week. Good luck to all the children who have worked very hard this year! 

Week ending 12.5.23


This week in Year 4 we have enjoyed lots of creative writing opportunities in English! We have been exploring descriptive writing in preparation for writing a Refugee Narrative, and even wrote some personification poems. In Maths, we are continuing to work on decimals, dividing 1 and 2 digit numbers by 10 & 100. The children have been working really hard in Maths and practicing their times tables challenge every day which is amazing! In WCSR, we are loving our text The Girl Who Stole an Elephant. In Science, we have been looking at circuits in more detail, learning about what causes circuits to stop working. In Geography, we have been researching about Desert and Rainforest biomes - the children are becoming so talented at taking notes of important information and creating fantastic work from them! A super week of learning, well done Year 4! 
 

Week ending 5.5.23

 

This week the children have worked on analysing the effect that specific vocabulary has on the reader in English, as we start to delve deeper into our book ‘The Journey’ by Francesca Sanna. In Maths, we have been exploring the connections between decimals and fractions - the children have worked brilliantly! In Science, we have been exploring simple series circuits for our topic Electricity, looking at symbols and what they represent. We are so invested in our WCSR book, The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, the children have been applying the summarise skill as we look back on everything we have read so far. 
 

We ended the week with a day full of celebrations as we enjoyed making crowns and dancing away at our coronation party. The children looked fantastic and had lots of fun learning about our new king!

 

Week ending 28.4.23

This week we have completed learning about fractions in Maths, the children have worked fantastically on this topic! In English we have been exploring new vocabulary from our new text and analysing pictures to work out what the narrative is about - we have had some very interesting predictions! We’re making great progress with our WCSR book - The Girl Who Stole An Elephant. In Geography, we have been learning about Biomes and Climate zones. In Science, we have started our new topic on Electricity, learning about electrical appliances and whether they run on mains or battery powered electricity. In RE, the children have explored different churches of different cultures from all around the world using virtual tours on the IPADS. We have been practising our times tables test everyday in preparation for the test in June and the children are keeping record of their scores, keep it up Year 4! We ended the week with perfecting our running skills in PE.

Week ending 21.4.23

 

We have had a great first week back! The children have settled back in really well after a lovely Easter holiday. In English, we have been planning to write a letter of persuasion. In Maths, the children are really enjoying Fractions and working fantastically. In WCSR, we have started a new book ‘The Girl Who Stole an Elephant’, the children are getting really confident in using their VIPERS skills. In History, we finished off our Anglo Saxons topic by becoming archaeologists; looking at artefacts from Sutton Hoo and exploring what this tells us about the Anglo Saxon era. In Science, we have completed our topic of vision and movement by investigating how muscles and bones work together to help us move. We have enjoyed researching about how the church began in RE and have been really eager to show off our tennis and athletics skills in PE. Well done Year 4! 

Week ending 31.3.23

We have had a wonderful final week of term in Year 4! The children are making great progress in Maths as we continue to work on fractions. In English, the children have produced fantastic traditional narratives with a twisted ending, I have been so impressed with their creativity! We have had our final few lessons on the book Anglo Saxon Boy in WCSR, and made brilliant connections to the Anglo Saxons in History, where we have been learning about the legacy of the Anglo Saxons. We have had many Easter celebrations, we loved the effort that went into the Easter bonnets!

Week ending 24.3.23

 

This week in English we have started to analyse the attributes of good vs evil characters in traditional tales. The children especially enjoyed completing a Role on the Wall for Snow White. In Maths we have been finding missing lengths of shapes, focusing on perimeter. We have finished our Science week celebrations with a mad science assembly and a session all about chemicals and the periodic table. We continued exploring Science as we built our own skeletons in class and learnt about which bones protect our vital organs. In WCSR, we are enjoying Anglo Saxon Boy which is giving us lots of insight in History, where this week we have been researching about what life was like in an Anglo Saxon settlement. 

Week ending 17.3.23

 

We have had a very exciting week in year 4 this week! We have had a variety of visitors in to celebrate Science week, from assemblies on DNA extraction and germs to science experiments in the classroom. The children really enjoyed these practical activities. Thank you to everyone who came to the Mother’s Day afternoon tea on Friday, it was so lovely seeing the children show their appreciation for the amazing women in their lives! We also attended a fantastic trip to the Liverpool Philharmonic on Monday, where the children got to see an orchestra live.

 

In English, we have been exploring new vocabulary in our class text ‘The Lost Happy Endings’. In Maths, we have been investigating kilometres and metres as we explore our new topic Length and Perimeter. In WCSR, we have enjoyed learning about the Anglo Saxon times and investigating feuds between kings during this time. The children have  made brilliant connections to our History topic of Anglo Saxons, where this week we have been researching the question, ‘Who were the Anglo Saxons?’ 
 

Overall we have had a very busy and exciting week of learning! 

Week ending 10.3.23

 

I would like to say a big WELL DONE to all the children in Year 4 this week, you have worked so hard on your spring assessments and I am so proud of your improved resilience this term! The children have enjoyed History this week as we have started to explore life during the Anglo Saxon Age. In Science, we have explored how light travels in straight lines and reflects off objects so that we can see, focusing on our topic of Vision and Movement. We have also started our Computing topic of Collecting Data and the children enjoyed looking at how data is collected in every day scenarios; such as the register in school. We have enjoyed dodgeball in PE and used all the knowledge of Easter from our cathedral trip to re write the Story of Easter: Betrayal and Trust. 
 

 

Week ending 3.3.23

 

We have had such a fun week in Year 4!
 

In English, the children have written an instruction guide on how to defeat a Viking monster. In Maths, we are dividing three digit numbers by a 1 digit number. In WCSR, we are loving Anglo Saxon Boy - the children are excited to make connections with our new History topic Anglo Saxons.

 

On Thursday, we went on a fabulous trip to Liverpool Cathedral. We took part in a range of Easter workshops all about Easter: a story of trust and betrayal. The children explored this topic through drama, art, and even had a tour of the cathedral. We had such a great time and the children behaved brilliantly on the trip! 

We were late to the party on Friday, but that didn’t stop us from stealing the show! We had some outstanding costumes for World Book Day 2023. Costumes from Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and many more!

We have had a lovely first week back in year 4! 
 

The children have been exploring Instruction Guides in English, after receiving a desperate letter all the way from Iceland asking for instructions on how to defeat some monsters! In Maths, we have introduced remainders when looking at division and the children are enjoying this new topic. In Science, we have completed two investigations; looking at how different vibrations cause different volumes of sound; and how the volume of sound changes the further away from the source. 
 

In Geography, we have been analysing the UK region and it’s landscape. The children are becoming so confident using Atlases! In computing we have looked at programming and the children explored how to use programming to create a logo. In PE, we have started Trigolf.

Week ending 10.2.23

 

We have had a lovely end to the half term this week with lots of exciting activities involved. The children have written brilliant myth narratives in English and are enjoying multiplication and division in Maths. In Science, the children have worked fantastically to name parts of the ear and identify their function. In Geography, we have been using atlases to research the physical and human features of the UK. We have had our last set of lessons on our book The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in WCSR.

 

On Thursday, we had a fantastic day all about well-being and took part in many relaxing activities. These include planting seeds, making post cards for our loved ones and reading in the sunshine! 
 

 

We finished the half term with a wonderful church service at St.Luke’s, all about perseverance! The children all performed so well and delivered a beautiful poem, we hope you enjoyed it. Have a wonderful half term Year 4!
 

Week ending 3.2.23

 

We have had another busy week of learning in Year 4. We have continued to explore myth narratives in English by identifying structure and language features in our Example Text. In maths we have been multiplying a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number. 
 

We are really enjoying The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe in our WCSR lessons and in Geography we have been researching some of England’s famous cities and their impact on the countries industrial development. The children are making brilliant progress in swimming lessons, well done Year 4!
 

This week we also had the privilege of visitors from Cronton college, who taught a fabulous lesson on building rockets!

Week ending 27.1.23

 

We have had a very exciting week in Year 4 as the children have started swimming lessons! I am very proud of their enthusiasm. In English we have started to plan writing our own myth narrative, inspired by Joe Todd Stanton’s ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. The children have wowed me with their abstract noun phrases and can’t wait to start writing! In Maths we have been looking at the relationship between multiplying/dividing by 10 & 100 and place value. In WCSR, we are enjoying The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, using our inference skills to decide whether the ‘Queen of Narnia’ is really the White Witch!
 

We have completed some fantastic work in Geography focusing on our topic of Capital Cities and World Countries. The children have created a fantastic informative project on a capital city of their choice. We also enjoyed a debate lesson in Geography - the class were divided into 7 countries and acted as the government of each country, discussing a hypothetical oil spill in the North Sea. Each country had to devise a plan to amend the oil spill and assign roles to each country through drama and I was really impressed with their maturity in this lesson. We definitely have some future leaders in the class! 
 

Week ending 20.1.23

 

This week in Year 4 we have started to explore new topics in class. In English we are analysing myth narratives, using our knowledge of Ancient Greece from last term to help us. In Maths, we have been expanding our knowledge of Multiplication and Division by applying factor pairs. In Science, we have been learning about sound and discovering how sound is made. We are really enjoying our new book The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in WCSR and the children have made some very interesting predictions. 
 

Thank you to everyone who attended our Class Worship on Perseverance on Thursday. The children worked really hard on the performance and we hope you enjoyed it! 
 

 

Week ending 13.1.23

 

This week we have had some fantastic learning take place in Year 4!
 

We have finished our information report writing in English and our first round of multiplication and division lessons in Maths. We have started a new topic in Geography - world countries and capital cities. We have been practicing for our class worship; our Christian value is perseverance. We have been working so hard and can’t wait to perform for you all! 
 

We also completed a very interesting Science experiment - how does the temperature affect the rate at which ice melts? 
 

The children recorded their results in a table and worked really well on this experiment, even with very icy hands!
 

Week ending 8.1.23

 

We have a wonderful creative few days in Year!

 

The children have worked in groups this week to create a collage on deforestation, as we were looking at God’s Green Earth as a theme.

 

We used lots of recycled material to create our artwork and the children worked really well in their teams. Well done everyone! 
 

We were also lucky enough to take part in a reflection workshop, looking back at our contribution to the Planets of the Pasture project earlier in the school year.

What a lovely final few days we have had! 
 

We have been well and truly invested in the Christmas spirit as we have enjoyed Cronton’s Got Talent, Breakfast with Santa, Elf Visit and Christingle service with Year 2!

Week ending 16.12.22

 

We have had a great final full week in year 4! 
 

We are continuing to build our knowledge of multiplication and division in Maths. In English, we are analysing structure and language features within an information report, as the children prepare to write their own on polar bears. 
 

We have completed our topic Ancient Greece in History and the children have created some fantastic spreadsheets on all they have learned. We also finished off the week by completing our topic of Audio Production in Computing, by recording fantastic podcasts. I have been so impressed with everyone’s teamwork skills - the ‘WHAT DOES YOUR LESSON LOOK LIKE?” podcast was so fun to record!

 

We have also been getting into the Christmas spirit this week as the countdown continues. Year 4 have made lovely Christmas cards and we have been singing many Christmas carols along the way! 
 

 

Week ending 9.12.22

 

We have had another busy week in year 4 this week!


In English, we used the iPads to find some interesting information on polar bears in preparation for writing information reports. 
 

 

 

In Maths, we are consolidating our knowledge of multiplication and division facts well. We have had an interesting lesson on myths and legends in History, where we explored the story of Medusa and the quest of Perseus. In Whole Class Shared Reading we are exploring national geographic magazines, analysing vocabulary and working on our retrieval skills. 

Week ending 2.12.22

 

Year 4 deserve a big well done and plenty of rest this weekend, the children have worked really hard during assessment week and we are so proud of their perseverance!
 

In English the children have also completed their outsider narrative and their writing is fabulous! In Maths we are securing our knowledge of multiplication and division and making great progress. We have been learning about Jesus being the light of the world in RE and enjoying learning new hymns in class. 
 

We have secured our knowledge of the water cycle by reading our descriptions of the water cycle to the rest of class in Science. The children have become so confident in using scientific terminology in their writing, well done Year 4! 

 

Week ending 25.11.22

 

We have had another busy week of learning in year 4!

 

In English we have selected a plan in preparation for writing our own outsider narrative. In maths we are looking at the relationship between multiplication and division. We have started a new book in WCSR - ‘The Works 2’ - the children have enjoyed exploring the different poems in this book. We especially enjoyed analysing personification within poems and discovering the effect personification has on the reader. 
 

In computing, we have been exploring audio production, recording and replaying our own sounds. We have particularly enjoyed researching about Greek Gods and Goddesses in History! 
 

We finished off the week with a penalty shoot out in relation to our international studies and the World Cup. We had so much fun and the children loved showing off their football skills along with Y3 and Y5, we certainly have some talented footballers in our class!

Week ending 18.11.22

 

This week in year 4 we have been preparing to write an outside narrative in English, the children have planned a variety of fronted adverbials to use in their writing. In Maths, we have started our new topic Multiplication and Division, the children’s times tables knowledge is really shining through! In WCSR, we have had our last lesson on Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief - Y4 have been applying their inference skills to answer questions. 
 

In History, we have been exploring what the Ancient Greeks have done for us and investigating the origins of democracy. In PE, we are developing our dance routine. We finished off the week with an interesting lesson in RE, where we looked into the story of Terry Whaite. We finished off the week by learning religious songs relating to Jesus being the light of the world!

 

Well done Y4, keep up the good work!

 

We would just like to say a big well done and give a special mention to Harry Thomas in Year 4. On Friday, Harry stood up in assembly in front of the whole school and read a book about how everyone is different, in light of anti-bullying week. This is a huge achievement for Harry and we are all so proud of him. Well done Harry!

Week ending 11.11.22

 

We have a wonderful week of learning in Year 4!

 

In English, we have been analysing our class text Leaf. The children have been using dictionaries to explore unfamiliar words and discovering how language can have an affect on the reader. In Maths we have started a new topic - Area. We have been using post it notes to explore the area of a shape. 

In WCSR, we continue to read Percy Jackson and the children are making new links to our Ancient History topic in Greece. As we looked at the origin of the Olympic Games in History, we decided to finish off the week by hosting our very own Olympics in PE. The children worked fantastically in their teams and we had lots of fun playing basketball, football and races. 
 

 

Week ending 4.11.22

 

We have had a lovely first week back in Year 4. We have been analysing images from our new text in English, making predictions and writing setting descriptions. In Maths, we have been finding the difference between numbers and the children have worked really hard to understand different working out methods, including column subtraction and number lines. 

 

In Science, we have started our new topic on States of Matter: Solids, Liquids and Gases. The children really enjoyed investigating the different states of water. We have also started a new topic in History, Ancient Greece, and I have been so impressed with the children making links with what we have discovered about Greece in Whole Class Shared Reading and Geography last term. We continue to read Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief in Reading lessons.

 

In RE we are exploring Christmas and the symbolism of light. We have also enjoyed our new topic of dance in PE.

 

Thank you to all that attended the KS2 disco, we had so much fun and we loved seeing the children enjoy themselves and dress up in their favourite costumes!

Week ending 20.10.22

 

What a fantastic start to Year 4 we have had!

 

This week we have completed our interesting topic of Newspaper Reports in English. The children have written some fabulous newspaper reports on a mysterious creature spotted along the beach. In Maths we are securing our knowledge of addition and subtraction and the children have made brilliant progress.

 

In science we finished our topic of the Classification of Living Things with a quiz. In Geography, the children displayed their amazing knowledge of the Mediterranean Sea, Greece and the Peloponnese by creating an informative brochure about the region.

 

We finished the week off with a fantastic Diwali celebration, where the children learned the story of Rama and Sita and created their own Diwali greeting cards.

 

I want to say a huge well done to all the children in year 4. You have all worked so hard and made my first half term at Cronton very enjoyable. Have a lovely rest and I look forward to seeing you all after the half term!

Week ending 14.10.22

 

We seemed to have started our week a little earlier this week as we came together on Sunday morning to lead our Harvest Service along with Y3. The children read beautifully and we were so impressed with their knowledge on the development of our partner school Arise in Tanzania. Thank you for all your kind donations and well done to all those involved!

This week we were environmental scientists! We explored our school grounds for living things and found plenty of plants and animals to classify in a classification key when we got back to the classroom. In English we have been putting our interview skills to the test, working in groups to roleplay reporter/ eye witness in preparation for writing a newspaper report next week. We finished the week off with a fabulous Diwali dance workshop. The children really enjoyed learning through dance and creativity.

Week ending 7.10.22

 

We have had a busy week in Y4 this week as we prepare to lead the Harvest Service on Sunday. Thank you for all your generous donations, we can't wait to talk about our partner school Arise in Tanzania!

 

In the classroom, we completed our topic of place value in Maths, and starting a new topic 'Newspaper Reports' in English. The children have been working hard to identify newspaper structure and language features. In Science, we have been learning about decomposers and their important role within the food chain.

 

In Geography, we have used the IPads to discover some famous Greek landmarks. The children have made a brilliant and informative double page spreadsheet on their favourite ones! In PE the children have learned gymnastic routines and controlling the ball in Football. 

 

We were also lucky enough to have a visit from a local farmer to the school. Year 4 loved speaking to Farmer Ollie and seeing the huge tractor up close on our school grounds!

Week ending 30.9.22

 

We have had a wonderful week in Y4!

Alongside our learning, we have been lucky enough to take part in some fantastic enrichment activities.

 

At the start of the week we celebrated European day of languages in style. The children enjoyed dressing up in Greek-inspired clothing and trying authentic Greek food. We were so impressed with the variety of costumes in school, from footballers to Greek Gods!

 

Later in the week we had the amazing opportunity to speak to our friends at Arise school in Tanzania. We shared our school experiences and learnt about school life at Arise through a Q&A zoom call with the whole school. It was really interesting and the children were fascinated by the fact that the students at Arise look after crops and animals.

 

 

Towards the end of the week, we took part in a lantern workshop with The Lantern Company over the course of two days. The children were so creative in their lantern decorating and displayed fantastic teamwork. The lanterns turned out amazing and we can't wait to see them displayed at the 'Planets of the Pasture' event that will take place later this month!

Week ending 23.9.22

 

We have enjoyed another busy week in school! 

 

It was great to meet all the parents at the Meet the Teachers evening on Wednesday, I hope that you found it informative and useful. 

 

The children have made brilliant progress in English, exploring similes and how they can be used to create an ominous atmosphere.

 

We have continued learning place value in Maths, the children have been working hard and are becoming confident in varying the ways in which they show their working out.

 

In science we have been exploring food chains and have completed our own food web. The children are showing increasing confidence in identifying producers, primary and secondary consumers and predators and prey. 

 

Children are showing off their times tables knowledge and I am already seeing an improvement in their results in the times tables challenge on Fridays, keep up the good work!

 

Well done to Tom and Phoebe on achieving the role of school counsellor for Y4, I know that they will be a great asset to the school counsel team!

Week ending 16.9.22

 

We have had a busy and exciting few weeks in Year 4!

The children have settled into the new classroom well and are already showing that they are ready to step up to the Y4 expectations.

 

In English we have been exploring our new wordless book 'The Whale' and the children have enjoyed using their inquisitiveness to figure out what the book is about and what atmosphere the author has created. 

In Maths the children have made a great start to learning about place value and using a variety of resources to show their working out; including dienes, number lines and part-whole models.

We have been learning about the classification of living things in Science and have explored the work of scientist Carl Linnaeus. We have developed our understanding of vertebrates/invertebrates, classified plants based on their common characteristics and completed our very own classification key on insects!

In RE the children are learning about prayer and I have been so impressed with their creative mind maps showing the different representations of prayer in all cultures.

 

We have been using our map reading skills to locate significant places within the Mediterranean Peloponnese region in Geography, and the children are excited to learn more about Greece when we celebrate European day in school on Monday 26th September.

In Whole Class Shared Reading we are reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and the children have been brilliant at making links between Ancient Greek Mythology and the Mediterranean. 

In PE the children have shown off their skills in football and gymnastics. The children are very excited to develop their skills in music as they learn to play the violin on Monday afternoons.

 

Finally we have had our school council vote on Friday and those who applied have delivered a great speech as to why they should be elected. They have offered some very creative ideas to put forward to support our school. 

A very busy first few weeks and the children have worked fantastically.

This year, it will be Miss Ellis  and Mrs Allison looking after you! We are both very excited to welcome you into Year 4 and cannot wait to have some wonderful times learning new things together.
