Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education is a vital part of our KEYS curriculum (Knowledge and Skills Empower You to Succeed). It has a significant and valuable role in both the taught curriculum, and in the enrichment opportunities we offer our pupils.


At Cronton C.E. Primary, it is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong learners’ with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We offer a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded.  As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. The teaching and learning of PSHE using the Jigsaw programme supports this. Through using Jigsaw our children acquire knowledge, understanding and the skills they need to manage their lives now and in their futures. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and as members of society and the global community and develops understanding of the British Values: democracy. the rule of law. individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith


As a Christian school Cronton C.E. believes that Christian Values are at the heart of everything we do and are firmly embedded within our teaching and learning, underpinning all curriculum areas but link particularly well with PHSE. We focus on one of our chosen Christian Value every term on a three year cycle.

Additional Opportunities to enhance the PHSE Curriculum at Cronton C.E. Primary School

  • Each class undertakes at least one day trip each academic year.

Jigsaw is implemented throughout the whole school during weekly whole class Jigsaw lessons focusing on different topics each term and is embedded through all lessons and the whole school day with everyone supporting and encouraging the children they interact with to use the skills they are developing and to make links to other areas of learning.

Jigsaw deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps pupils to develop themselves, their understanding of the world, and their ability to communicate their feelings. Children at Cronton also acquire an understanding and experiences of British values that are necessary if they are to make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect other, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as a British citizen.

The Six Puzzles (Themes/ Units of work)

There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from the start of each academic year:

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me  

Each Puzzle has six Pieces (lessons) which work towards an ‘end product’, for example, The School Learning Charter or The Garden of Dreams and Goals. Each Piece has two Learning Intentions: one is based on specific PSHE learning and one is based on emotional literacy and social skills development .

The whole school works on the same Puzzle at the same time, meaning that each Puzzle can be launched with a whole-school assembly and learning can be celebrated by the whole school in a meaningful way.



It is the school’s intent that standards of attainment across the school will exceed that which are expected of our children nationally. At Cronton, we continuously assess the implementation and impact of our jigsaw lessons in order to achieve these outstanding results across all year groups and ensure we provide the support that is necessary for all children to achieve whether that be in class or with the support of our inclusion team. Through our PSHE education, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become caring, respectful and confident individuals


Additional Information 

PSHE Education is a school curriculum subject in England which focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and attributes to keep children and young people healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work. It also encompasses RSE  (Relationships Education and Relationships Sex Education) which teaches children about having loving, equal and safe relationships in all areas of their life. The elements of Relationships Sex Education are taught through the National Curriculum for Science at Cronton C.E. Primary.  Briefly the expectations are:

In Year 2, children learn that animals, including humans, have offspring that grow into adults. They should be introduced to the concepts of reproduction and growth, but not how reproduction occurs.

In Year 5, children are taught about the life cycles of humans and animals, including reproduction. At Cronton, this will be extended to include human reproduction in Year 6. They also learn about the changes that happen in humans from birth to old age. This includes learning what happens in puberty.
